UHF RFID Reader Antenna using Novel Planar Metamaterial Structure for RFID System
نویسندگان
چکیده
An Ultra High Frequency (UHF) half-loop antenna used in Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) systems is proposed with a planar patterned metamaterial structure of compact size. The size of the planar patterned metamaterial structure is (0.20λ*0.20λ*0.0023λ) mm. This antenna consists of two metamaterial unit cells having negative permittivity and permeability. Simulation results of input return loss, radiation pattern, and directivity of this antenna are presented using CST software. A comparison between the conventional antenna and the new metamaterial half-loop antenna is also provided. The simulated results show that the metamaterial antenna has a resonance frequency of 0.866 GHz, a realized gain of 1.96 dB, and an efficiency increase of about 20%. Simulation and measurement results are in perfect agreement, which proves that the proposed antenna can operate in the UHF band for RFID systems. UHF RFID Reader Antenna
This chapter addresses the various design issues, requirements, and specifications in designing reader antennas for UHF RFID applications. In a typical UHF system, the RFID reader antennas are geography specific; that is, there are different antennas for different geography, namely North America, Europe, et cetera. The discussion on the design challenges and performance expectations lead to a n...

Metamaterials (Marques et al., 2008; Eleftheriades & Balmain, 2005; Herraiz-Martinez et al. 2009) are one of the many new technologies being adopted to improve the performance of radio frequency identification (RFID) systems (Finkenzeller, 2003; Stupf et al., 2007). In particular, metamaterial-based antenna designs are being used more frequently to improve the read range and reduce the size of ...

A main application in radio frequency identification (RFID) sensor networks is the function that processes real-time tag information after gathering the required data from multiple RFID tags. The component technologies that contain an RFID reader, called the interrogator, which has a tag chip, processors, coupling antenna, and a power management system have advanced significantly over the last ...
